With tomorrow being the last day of September, and September having been Save The Koala Month, here is some koala feel-goods 🐨 🐨

Often we have so many tragic stories when it comes to koalas, so it is so wonderful when we have the opportunity to report good news.

Last Sunday we had the privilege of releasing two koalas back into the wild, where they belong.

Here’s a video of Pirate Pete, who had clamydial conjunctivitis, and after a stint at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for recovery, he was released by Heidi, back home on Mt Tamborine, and the residents that love him.

The Black Plum Hunt is on!

Expedition yesterday on SEQ Water land along Wyaralong Dam with Martin, the environmental officer from Lockyer Council and Mick from SEQ Water looking for the elusive and endangered Black Plum.

There are only between 160-180 individual trees left.

As one of the first steps of part of the Species Recovery Plan, which is a joint effort of individuals and local councils within the species range, is to survey areas to see if any individual trees previously unrecorded can be discovered.

With so few individuals left, the first stage is to build a comprehensive database of information. To learn as much about the species as we can. This will provide a foundation of knowledge that will help inform future decisions as we cocreate the Species Recovery Plan.

We have council environmental officer surveying areas on the Sunshine Coast at this moment, and genetic sequencing will be done in the near future to further understand the species genetic timeline.

Next month we will converge for a Threats Workshop, the first of two workshops, where individuals, and officers at local and state level come together, to formulate how we can save the species from extinction. 🌳

Today is World Cassowary Day.

After the lyre bird, it is my favorite Australian bird species. We were fortunate enough to see this magnificent bird at Mission Beach, Etty Bay and up in the Atherton Tablelands, in North Queensland, late last year.

There are 3 known living species, with the southern cassowary being the one that we were able to witness.

With 90 percent of their diet consisting of fruit, this makes them critically important in the dispersal of seeds throughout the rainforests.

There is a particular connection between the project we are working on to save an endangered south east Queensland dry rainforest tree from extinction and the cassowary. The theory goes that the cassowary may have had its range much further south, and that it or a similar large ground dwelling bird may have helped in the dispersal of the fruit of this tree species.

The forest dwelling cassowary is reputed to be the world’s most dangerous bird (although more deaths are recorded from the common ostrich), and with it’s carapace or helmet and deadly claws you could easily see that it was ready for battle.

And a battle it is in. For its very existence. Land clearing and fragmentation with the domino effect of car strikes and dog attacks, as areas become urbanised, are threats that need to be seriously addressed if the species is to survive. Current estimates are that there are only 4,000 adults left.

This is where organisations such as the Rainforest Reserves Australia, Gondwana Rainforest Trust and Rainforest Rescue come in. They raise funds for the purchase of high value rainforest land protecting it forever from development so that it can remain the homes of cassowaries and the many diverse species that call these rainforests home.
